Located in the heart of the Badlands of the Red Deer River Valley, a visit to Drumheller is a chance to learn about a time long ago, millions of years ago in fact. Driving into the Valley it seems to be another world as the layers upon layers of the earths history are revealed. The terraced, multicolored walls of the Valley are composed of layers of shale, sandstone, ironstone, bentonite and clay.  During the process of sedimentary land building, the remains of plant, animal and sea life which lived and died at that time were tombed in the sediments and petrified. As erosion exposes the layers, fossils are therefore discovered and studied by geologists and paleontologists. The study of these fossils of plant, animal and sealife provide a picture of what life was like over 60 million years ago on the earth.
